Grab and Go Kids Planner: Yo-Yo Competition, Plants and Animals, More

We've compiled a listing of free and low-cost family activities in and around Rosemont.

Raising kids is tiring enough, as is keeping them active with stimulating activities. To help ease that planning process, we've gathered a listing of several fun, low and no-cost family-friendly events happening in and around Rosemont this week. From a statewide yo-yo championship to a plant sale at the zoo and free library events, there's sure to be something to keep the kids learning and moving.

Rancho Cordova Library rocks out

Where/When: Rancho Cordova Library, 9845 Folsom Blvd. /10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Why Go: What's better than spending a rainy day playing Wii, Rockband Special Edition, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock with other enthusiasts? All ages are welcome, light snacks are provided and help is provided for beginners. So unleash your inner rock star!

California State Yo-Yo Championship

Where/When: Westfield Downtown Plaza, 547 L St. / 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Why Go: Watch more than 200 competitors show off their yo-yo skills and walk through a mall of experienced yo-yo professionals. Get your kids interested in a fun, low-cost hobby and watch the state championship, which is the first step toward competing in the National Yo-Yo Championship and World Yo-Yo Champsionship.

Pricing: Free to attend, $5 to compete per division

Bloomin' Crazy Plant Festival and Sale

Where/When: Sacramento Zoo, Land Park and Sutterville Road / 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Why: What better way to “leap into spring” than learning about gardening and picking up a few colorful plants to spruce up your yard? Professionals from garden clubs, nurseries and other plant organizations will be on hand to answer questions and dish the gardening dirt. All-day activities include face painting, “funshop” crafts, interactive wildlife wagons and hands-on artifacts in the Discovery Room.

Pricing: Included in regular zoo admission:
General: $11
Seniors: $9.75
Children 3-12: $7
Children 0-2: Free

Lego-rama!

Where/When: Central Library, 828 I St. / 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday.

Why Go: Join the library's monthly, all-ages event to enjoy and create using its stash of Lego bricks. The theme changes every month, and March's theme is vehicles, so get ready to zoom, zoom! Note that creations are disassembled at the end of the program.

Pricing: Free; downtown metered parking is also free on Sundays.

Sakuramento Anime Sundays

Where/When: Rancho Cordova Library, 9845 Folsom Blvd. / 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Why Go: Watch Anime and Anime music videos, play collectible card games, practice art skills and create your own Anime music videos. This is a teen-aged event, and is sponsored by the Sakuramento Anime Society and the library. Participants are asked to enter through the side for the community room door. 

Pricing: Free

Read to the Dogs

Where/When: Rancho Cordova Library, 9845 Folsom Blvd. / 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Why Go: School-aged kids are welcome to bring a book from home or borrow one from the library and read to a furry canine pal on loan from the Lend a Heart Association. The program helps kids boost reading skills while they make a new friend.
