Crime has been a major point of discussion lately.
Between the homicide of Jessica Funk-Haslam, a shooting at an elementary school and a carjacking in the same day, safety and crime have been hot topics in Rosemont and on this site lately. So is Rosemont getting worse, or has it just been a bad few weeks? Have these recent incidents changed the way you think about Rosemont, or will things quiet down soon enough? The recent string of events, along with the community's response, inspired two residents to plan a community walk on April 14. They hope a united community can stop any potential changes for the worse before things get out of hand. What do you think, Rosemont? Has your opinion of the neighborhood changed? Do you feel safe here? Vote in our poll below and leave a comment with your …

How would you rate the performance of Leise Martinez, Peter Callas and Nathan McGill?
If Rosemont High School's three top administrators received a report card, what would it say? Would it be bad enough to justify firing all three of them? That might just be what happens next year, Principal Leise Martinez said. Rosemont, what do you think of this decision? Should the Sacramento City Unified School District stick to its guns and replace Rosemont's administration, or would that be a setback for the school? Vote in our poll below to let us know what grade you'd give Martinez, Callas and McGill; leave a comment to let us know why you voted the way you did.

White House report makes case that the Obama administration is doing all it can. Your thoughts?
The average area price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline dipped Monday to a Sacramento metropolitan area average of $4.263, but the average price is still 51 cents higher than a month ago and 40.7 cents greater than a year ago, according to figures from AAA and Oil Price Information Service noted by City News Service and the Sacramento Bee. The White House is having its say, notes a Huffington Post story, unveiling a report Monday (attached) that boasts of successes by the administration in making America more energy independent over the past three years. But why are Sacramento motorists paying so much? Who bears the most blame? Vote in our poll below and let us know whose fault the price jump is.

Will last week's tragedy unite Rosemont for years or just days?
When Rosemont Little League officials took to a local television station in January to ask for help, no one responded. But over the weekend, volunteers spent two days doing renovations made possible by a number of donations from local businesses. Last week, a capacity crowd packed Atonement Lutheran Church on Kiefer Boulevard, and much of the talk was focused on the positive: encouraging residents to volunteer and get to know their kids better. At that meeting, scores of attendees signed up to get more information about Rosemont Neighborhood Watch. A high school booster club has organized fundraisers, and volunteers have spent hours tying ribbons around town. All this was brought up by a horrific tragedy, but does that mean it will fade …

The Sacramento Bee reports County Administrator Brad Hudson's controversial spending habits have landed him in hot water.
The Sacramento County Administrator's spending habits have again landed him in hot water. Brad Hudson, who was recruited from Riverside in June 2011, has spent $15,000 on a LogiSon Sound Masking System he believes will ensure the privacy of certain sensitive conversations. The Sacramento Bee reports his purchase is raising eyebrows with Sacramento County Supervisors, and is another knock against the administrator, who in December spent $21,000 redecorating his office. Hudson defended his purchase as necessary in protecting the sensitive conversations that take place in the county's labor relations and personnel offices, located on two separate floors of the county administrative building downtown. County supervisors the Bee spoke with were…

A three-judge panel ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. What do you think?
A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday ruled that Proposition 8, the voter-approved ban on same-sex weddings, was unconstitutional, marking a victory for supporters of same-sex marriage across the state. The 2-1 decision will likely be appealed to either the full 9th Circuit Court or directly to the U.S. Supreme Court. "It stripped same-sex couples of the ability they previously possessed to obtain and use the designation of 'marriage' to describe their relationships," according to the court's decision. "Nothing more, nothing less. Proposition 8 therefore could not have been enacted to advance California's interests in child-rearing or responsible procreation, for it had no effect on the rights of same-sex …

Tell us how you think the Rosemont Community Foundation should spend its latest grant.
For almost a year now, Rosemont residents have been putting in hours of volunteer time to try to improve the area under a program called Revitalizing Rosemont. They've cleaned graffiti, landscaped at least one intersection and distributed informational packets to every home in the area. Now they have a second round of grant funding to use. The Rosemont Community Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Rosemont Community Association, announced recently that it had received a $7,500 grant from State Farm Insurance. Blogger Linda Kenner said in a post this week that some possible uses included outreach to local businesses, more graffiti cleanup, additional beautification projects and more. Rosemont, here's your chance to weigh in: How should the…

The Sacramento County Executive has spent $21,000 on office furniture so far.
The new Sacramento County Executive has been busy redecorating. Brad Hudson, who was recently recruited from Riverside, has spent $21,000 on furniture at his county office. The Sacramento Bee reports his purchases have included a $7,300 desk, a few tables, conference chairs and "linen wall coverings." Hudson defended the spending, saying he wanted to create an "open-door" environment. "I wanted something that was appropriate for the work that we do," Hudson told the Bee. "It's not extravagant. I just want people to feel like they can come in." Others the Bee spoke with were less supportive of the purchases. Sacramento County, which has been hammered by budget cuts in recent years, may not be making the best choice by spending this money, a…

No matter what you celebrate, share your story with us here.
Whether you like to chow down on latkes or fill stockings by the fireplace, almost everybody has a special holiday tradition. With Hanukkah upon us and Christmas and Kwanzaa both just a few days away, Rosemont Patch would like to hear about the unique traditions that bring your family together. Do your kids delight in leaving cookies and milk out for Santa, or would they rather play Dreidel? Is a certain kind of gift always given out in your family around this time of year? Is yours a family of blended religions and backgrounds? If you celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas (or some other combination of holidays), please tell us how you balance them. Rosemont, tell us about your holiday traditions and share your stories in the comments section …

It's actually not just the politicians downtown, but it is really the politicians in Washington DC that have forced the prison debacle. It is a result of a Federal mandate being placed on the whole state. Write your Federal Senators and Congressmen. Either way, I agree with you, it sucks.   more ›
