Dorner Races for State Track Title

Rosemont High School junior Nia Dorner competes at the CIF State Track and Field Championships this weekend.

Starting Friday, Nia Dorner will be racing for a state track title.

Dorner, a junior at Rosemont High School, is competing in the girls 400 meter dash at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis.  She is the only Wolverine racing at the meet.

The Rosemont junior is among the favorites in the 400 and has the third-fastest time in the state this year.  In April, Dorner was named one of the Sacramento Bee's Top 10 track stars to watch in 2012.

"I call her the practice stopper," said Rosemont track coach Scott Maddox.  "When she runs, people stop and watch her.  She's worked very hard to put herself in this position."

Dorner is making her third trip to the state track championships.  Last year, she placed 6th in the 400 and 7th in the 200 meter dash.  As a freshman, she competed in the girls 4x100 meter relay and the 100 meter dash.

This year, Dorner is only racing the 400.  On Friday, she will race a qualifying heat for Saturday's final.  If she wins her heat or has one of the top six times, Dorner will qualify for the final.

Rosemont Patch will keep you updated on Dorner's progress throughout the weekend.  You can also check CIF's web site for race results on Friday and Saturday.
