Video: Hubert Bancroft Elementary Honors Veterans

The school held a ceremony Thursday morning with poetry and songs.

Two particular days in November are a little "tasking" for Hubert H. Bancroft Principal Enrique Flores.

The U.S. Marine Corps veteran said he gets sentimental on Nov. 10 and 11, the Corps' birthday and Veterans Day. He spends time on those days reconnecting with buddies from his years of service, 1986-1990.

"We don't talk much about what we did, but we hang out," Flores said. He noted that whenever he sees someone in uniform, he thanks them for their service "because I know what it's like."

On Thursday morning, Bancroft students did the same, honoring local veterans with songs and poems.

Navy veteran Doug Armstrong, whose son is a sixth-grader at the school, said the tribute feels nice.

"It wasn't cool to be in the military when I was in like it is now, so people just ignored you," said Armstrong, who was on active duty from 1993 to 1998 and did tours in the western Pacific and the Arabian Gulf.
