“In these uncertain times, it becomes critically important that we work hard to educate our community about budget challenges and listen to their suggestions and concerns,” Superintendent Jonathan Raymond said in a press release. “The better informed our community is, the better they can work with us to find innovative and resourceful ways we can do more to accelerate student learning with less state funding.”

The forums are intended to explain the potential impacts of , which hinges on voters extending a 2009 tax increase in order to avoid massive cuts to K-12 schools.

The district has cut $177 million from expenditures over the past nine years–a 35 percent reduction–according to the release. And even if Brown’s proposed tax extensions are approved, more cuts will likely be needed.

“Even if voters pass tax extensions in a special election, it is projected that more cuts will be needed to balance [the district’s] budget for next year, due to the lingering recession and enrollment declines in some areas,” the district stated.

The district has also launched an online survey to ask parents and community members for their opinions on things like consolidating and closing schools, doing away with bus transportation and other options. Click here to take that survey.
