Scary Story Contest Entry: 'Your Face'

By Nicole and Lynnette Rheault, Rosemont High School 10th and 12th graders.

“All right, kids,” called the tour guide, Susie, “We will now be passing the library where Mr. Something used to do all of his studying. You may look around if you like but everything is Italian.” The kids all scattered and Cooper went to one section of books. He knew a bit of Italian because of his friend, Moretti, and so he could read what the books were; they were books on poems. Cooper went to the oldest book and pulled it out. It was a deep, aged, red book with parchment pages that were falling out.

“OK, let’s continue, kids.” said Susie. “Next up is the mistress’s bedroom. She and her husband both were elegant people but near the end of their lives they kept themselves locked in this house 'till they died mysteriously. When they were found, their faces looked as if they had rotted for hundreds of years in the ground.”

“Yeah, well maybe they were dead for hundreds of years,” one of the class clowns said.

“That would be a good assumption but the thing is that it was only their faces that looked rotten; the rest of their bodies were only dead for two days,” Susie explained and looked at the boy. “Their death was unexplainable that for many years it was kept a secret.”

“Alright, let’s continue,” Susie said and motioned her arms for the kids to follow her. “Next is the nursery.”

Cooper was the last out of the room because he was intoxicated by the elegance. As he was leaving he heard a shuffling sound like two pieces of wood moving across each other. He turned around and he saw this huge Victorian mirror on the wall.

“That wasn’t there before,” he said and began walking towards it. “Man, this mirror is beautiful. What detail,” he said and skimmed his hand over the angles in the corners and fire up the sides. He then noticed the engraving at the bottom. “Dearbhófar do duine bás i ndiaidh fiche Meathann. Hmm, I wonder what that means.” He then looked into the mirror to see himself.

“Cooper! Cooper, come on you’re missing the tour,” shouted one of his friends.

“OK,” he cried while looking over his shoulder, “I’ll be right there!” He turned back to the mirror and what he saw turned his blood cold. What he saw was his face with leathery grey skin shriveled to the shape of his skull and his eyes popping out of their sockets. He opened his mouth to scream and a river of blood rolled out. It was so horrendous that he felt he was going to barf. He began to feel faint and fell to his knees. He closed his eyes but the sight was ingrained in his sub-cranium.

He looked up at the inscription on the mirror and said softly to himself, “Whatever that says, I bet it has something to do with that image.”
