Do You Agree With the Bee's Pick for Sacramento School Board?

The Sacramento Bee announced its endorsements for Sacramento City Unified School District board Friday.

The Sacramento Bee announced its endorsement Friday for Sacramento City Unified School District Area 3, which includes Rosemont.

Two candidates with strong Rosemont ties are running for the open seat, former Rosemont Community Association board member Mark Ambrose and current Rosemont High School PTA President Christina Pritchett.

Eric Sunderland, a SMUD employee endorsed by the Sacramento City Teachers Association, is also running.

The Bee endorsed Ambrose, a lawyer, citing his "thorough understanding of the Education Code and collective bargaining."

"The race is a tough choice between Ambrose and Pritchett, but Ambrose gets the edge," the Bee's Editorial Board wrote.

What do you think of the Bee's pick? Who do you support for school board? Tell us in the comments.

I support Christina in this race. My children have been in the Rosemont school system for years and I have never heard of the other two names before. I myself am very involved in their education and know most of the other parents, teachers, and administrators in the schools. I have seen Christina step up and become involved in the schools even to the extent when she did not have a child in that school. That is true dedication! Christina also earned my respect and vote when she stepped up to help take care of the food for Jessica's funeral. Christina will represent the Rosemont community if elected. In light of the past year's events, everyone knows we definitely need that. Good Luck Christina!

Still not sure. Would like to hear more from the ones running.
Michael J. Pritchett October 22, 2012 at 08:13 PM
Hi Diane, Christina reads the patch, what would you like to know?
Carol October 22, 2012 at 08:23 PM
Although Christina is not a board member of the Rosemont Community Association, she has been at the meetings and has been involved in our activities, most recently the Rosemont Community Annual Celebration. As a board member, for over seven years, I've never heard of Mark Ambrose. If he was involved, it has been awhile since his involvement. Christina has been very involved in the Rosemont Community.

I have known Christina for years through Scouts and swimming, she has always helped out. She has shown lots of knowledge and dedication. She has my vote.

I agree we have outstanding choices in the School Board race. Christina has been active in the PTA and has been a leader. Mark, has also been a community leader, who has demonstrated his commitment to the children of Rosemont through his service. The 3rd District, will be well served,as seen by those who have made themselves available to serve on the School Board.

I have known Eric Sunderland for years. Eric lives in the College Greens area and has been active in that community. Eric grew up in Sacramento, is a product of Sacramento schools, and is committed to working together with teachers and parents to improve the quality of education in Sacramento area schools.

I also have known Eric Sunderland for years and think he would be a great representative on the Sac City School Board. Eric and Tamie know the Sac City School District very well since they both attended public schools here. Their daughter Andee is also a product of Sac City schools and she recently graduated from Mills College. For Eric, it's all about what is best for our kids.

The Bee was mistaken in its endorsement for School Board Area 3. Eric Sunderland is by far the best candidate to serve the Rosemont, College Greens, Rancho Cordova and Lincoln Village areas as a School Board member. He has broader experience than the other candidates. Eric Sunderland has a long history of activism in civic and community affairs in the City and County of Sacramento. Eric knows the school district and Area 3 do not operate in a vacuum. His advocacy includes issues of human and labor rights, housing for low-income and homeless children and adults, and the budget battles that take place at every level of government. In addition to working a full-time job with SMUD, being and active community volunteer, Father, Uncle and neighbor of SCUSD students, Eric has been walking our neighborhoods and talking to voters face-to-face to hear directly from people about issues concerning members of the community and that affect our schools. He is walking-the-walk and has earned my respect, support and my vote. Eric Sunderland brings passion and commitment for students to the Board of Education. From his website you will learn that Eric is a product of Sacramento City public schools and a graduate of the original Sac High. Eric’s daughter, Andee, is a product of the same SCUSD public schools and a graduate of Mills College.

Eric Sunderland is an activist who will support neighborhood schools and be a voice for the Rosemont community on the board. He won't be afraid to speak out about the district's misplaced priorities that seem to favor outside consultants over the classroom.
