A big performance on a big stage topped off with a home run to remember can describe ’s big victory over Dixon Friday as the Cougars’ varsity baseball team routed the Rams 12-0 at Raley Field.
Capital Christian excelled both on offense and defense; the Cougars scored seven of its 12 runs in the first inning while only giving up three hits for the entire game.
Of the 12 runs that Capital Christian scored, the most exciting one was a solo home run by Junior Mauricio Dubon that just bounced off the left field fence and was immediately ruled a home run by the second base umpire.
“It’s an incredible feeling (hitting the home run),” Dubon said. “I wish my mom could have saw it but she couldn’t be here, but all my family is here and I thank God for that.
“That’s the best feeling ever, hitting the ball like that, it feels so great right now.”
Capital Christian head coach Nelson Randolph said that Dubon’s home run was a special moment for him to be able to hit a home run at Raley Field.
“It’s not often that a high schooler hits a home run at Raley Field, that’s the big boys’ field, then you have a skinny scrawny guy hit one yard,” Randolph said. “To see where he came from, where he’s at right now and for him to have this opportunity to come here and hit a home run is special for him.
For Dixon, this is their second straight loss to Capital Christian and third loss overall to the Cougars this season, which is a season sweep.
Dixon head coach Scott Winslow said that despite the big loss, this prepares them for the playoffs since both teams had already secured its playoff spots.
“This was more of an exhibition game since they (Capital Christian) had first place locked in solid and we had second place locked in as well,” Winslow said. “I told the kids after the game that our second season starts tomorrow.”
“As you can see from the outcome of the game that we have a lot to work on for the playoffs and we had a challenging practice the other day. We have to work on all our weak areas and when you play a very good team like Capital Christian, they have a tendency to expose your weaknesses.”
Capital Christian ends a dominate season going undefeated in league 14-0 and 23-2 overall while Dixon ends their season 10-4 right behind Capital Christian and 12-12 overall.
“This is the best team that I’ve coached,” Randolph said. “I’ve coached a lot of good teams before, but to go undefeated in league this season is a first time for me and maybe a first for Capital. This is a special group and I’m proud of them.”
Although Capital Christian will go into the playoffs as the Golden Empire League champions, they will have tough competition ahead in the playoffs and they will not have any home games in the playoffs. The Cougars will most likely face Calaveras in the first round and Echelon will be the No. 1 seed in the playoff bracket.
“Our work is going to be cut out for us and we’re going to continue to work hard and it will still be an uphill battle for us,” Randolph said. “There’s some quality teams ahead for us and we’ll be up for the challenge.”
Dixon will face the Hilmar Yellowjackets in the first round of the playoffs on the road Wednesday.
