Are You Applying for Open Enrollment? Tell Us Why

The Sacramento City Unified School District's open enrollment period begins soon.

Parents in Rosemont don't necessarily have to send their kids to schools in Rosemont.

That's because the Sacramento City Unified School District allows open enrollment; parents can fill out some paperwork and send their children to any other school in the district, as long as that school has the space for them.

"The Open Enrollment process is an opportunity for each student who resides permanently within the boundaries of the Sacramento City Unified School District to apply for enrollment in participating elementary, K‐8, middle or high schools within the district, based on space availability for the 2012‐2013 school year," Superintendent Jonathan Raymond wrote in a letter to parents [PDF link].

The open enrollment window for the 2012-13 school year is from Jan. 30 to Feb. 10. If the school a parent is applying to is full, then a lottery system will decide the non-local students who get to attend that campus.

If you're a parent in the Rosemont area who has chosen not to send your kids to a Rosemont school, tell us why. Post a comment below, email cody.kitaura@patch.com, or call 916-200-6496.
