RHS Key Club Volunteers for Chinese New Year Celebration

Rosemont High School students helped out with the Chinese New Year celebration at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center this weekend.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 the annual local Chinese New Year celebration held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Sacramento from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. was a huge success not only because of the countless amount of people who attended the celebration, but for Rosemont High School Key Club volunteers as well.

About thirty performances from young, adorable children dancing traditional dances to senior citizens singing to classic Chinese songs and playing native instruments, it show-cased the Chinese culture. Other than the outstanding performances, there were vendors and game booths for little kids. Young children and adults filled the room with everlasting enjoyment and amusement.

From setting up tables and chairs at eight o’clock in the morning until the very end of cleaning up the venue, Key Club members were alert and ready to work. They were assigned with specific jobs such as working on game booths, face painting, origami-making, and other paper crafts. Megan Lee, Alethea Theonard and Daseul Song coordinated the event, making sure that all the performers were present and lined up at the waiting area. Running around continuously searching for performers in the crowd, painting hundreds of faces, and making paper cranes over and over, it was not an easy job; however, at the end of the day Key Clubbers were warmly recognized by other people. They were distinguished amongst the most hard-working group of kids reflecting on RHS students.

Megan Lee expressed: “Volunteering with the RHS Key Club in support of the Chinese New Year event, I experienced the rush of culture surrounding the downtown community. Many children performed traditional arts along with adults who staged beautiful performance.

"The organization for the event decorated the stage with a bright dragon in the darkness and the room was packed with viewers glued to their seats and focused on stage. The kids enjoyed games and face painting held by student volunteers and lunch served by donated foods from Panda Express. Vendors exhibited key chains, necklaces, brochures, and many other attractions.

"The experience of volunteering for the event was rewarding, as people talked about the performances, in ways, the success of the performances was in the hands of the volunteers and by hearing the compliments of the excellence of the event, it showed as volunteers we had done our jobs.”
