Sheriff Asks for $9.5 Million

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones says his department needs more funding.

As many as 63 deputy sheriffs could be laid off in the next fiscal year–but Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones doesn't want to use that number.

Jones presented his department's proposed budget cuts at a . Of a $26.7 million projected deficit, the sheriff's department will be able to stave off most cuts through cost savings and anticipated state revenue.

But he's still $9.5 million short.

"We are not asking you to fix our entire problem," Jones told the supervisors.

Jones said if his department doesn't get more funding, its helicopters would be grounded again, burglaries wouldn't be investigated, a gang supression unit would be eliminated and there would be fewer patrol shifts.

Jones said he would probably have to lay off employees, but he wasn't prepared Monday to say exactly how many. He said he didn't want to use potential layoffs as a scare tactic to spook the board of supervisors into giving his department more funding.

"Every dollar I get is coming from somewhere else," Jones said.
