Share Your Thoughts: Area Mayors Add Their Names to Anti-Prop 8 Letter

Davis mayor Joe Krovoza and Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson lent their names to an anti-Proposition 8 letter organized by the online Courage Campaign.

In a letter addressed to the Supreme Court, Sacramento and Davis mayors Kevin Johnson and Joe Krovoza joined other California mayors voicing their opposition of California's voter-approved Proposition 8.

The letter was distributed publically by Courage Campaign, an online advocate "for progressive change and full equality in California and across the country."

As Mayors, we have a responsibility to unite our cities, not divide them. Key to that is building family integrity, including ensuring all loving, committed couples in our cities have the same freedoms and rights. Proposition 8 created separate and unequal status for same-sex couples throughout California, and denies equality to same-sex couples, violating the Constitutional guarantee of due process and equal protection.

The Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday on Proposition 8, which restricts marriages to unions between a man and a woman.

Enacted by voters in 2008 and supported by 53.9 percent of Sacramento County voters and 41.3 percent of Yolo County voters, the proposition was deemed unconstitutional in 2012 by a federal appeals court panel. The appeal found the initiative at odds with U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment, guaranteeing equal protection under the law.

A Supreme Court decision is likely by June.

What do you think? Did the mayors make the right call? Has your stance on Prop. 8 changed since 2008?
