Park Officials Call Special Meeting to Hear Rosemont Little League Cost Concerns

The little league is facing an increase in the fees to use Cordova Recreation and Park District playing fields. The league says it already does the bulk of the work maintaining the fields.

The Rosemont Little League is being charged 4,000 percent more this year to rent fields, and will have an audience to plead its case to park officials next week.

The Cordova Recreation and Park District charged the little league $50 for field rentals last year and is charging $2,000 this year, according to the league and a KCRA report.

The district has called an informal special meeting for Monday to discuss the fees, although no action will be taken.

The $2,000 fee breaks down to $10 a player, which the league worries could be too much for some parents.

League officials are also concerned because they're already doing much of their own maintenance and repairs at the fields.

"This year alone, we have already invested over $6,000 and hundreds of volunteer hours into our fields," Rosemont Little League President Tina Klostermann said in a letter posted to Facebook.

"We asked what the $10 fee would be for, and the CRPD says that it is what it costs to maintain our field and will include a weekly mow, watering of the field and to correct any safety issues. As you all know, we do our own field maintenance."

In an interview with Patch last year, a little league coach said the park district always promises to do extra field maintenance before the season starts, but doesn't follow through.

The league's opening day ceremony is set for Saturday, with a parade at 8:30 a.m. and games at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
