Californians Petition to Secede From Nation

So far, more than 8,000 Golden Staters have joined an online drive to leave the union.

Updated 4:17 p.m.

In more than 40 states across the nation, signatures are being gathered asking President Obama to allow states to consider seceding from the union, according to press reports over the weekend.

The states, ranging from blue states like New York and New Jersey to some of the reddest of the red, such as North Dakota and Texas, must collect 25,000 signatures within 30 days to receive an official response from the White House. Texas already has more than 25,000, according to reports.

On Nov. 11, just five days after President Obama was re-elected to the White House, the movement officially came to California and now has 6,832 signatures and growing.

The petition was started by Jennifer K. from Yucca Valley.

However, California's movement has not seen the fervor of some other states, such as New Hampshire, where the creator has launched a Facebook campaign.

There is a California Secession Facebook page, which recently received a post linking to the online petition after almost one year of inactivity.

Last year, about a dozen counties in the eastern and southern parts of Southern California, minus Los Angeles, tried to secede from the state to form "Southern California."

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone's reasons for secession included "too much money spent on state prisons, too much power for public unions, too many regulations and not enough of a crackdown on illegal immigration," according to the New York Times.

In response to these and other secession petitions, Joshua L. from Birmingham, AL, started a petition to deport everyone that signed a petition to withdraw their state from the nation.

It currently has over 8,300 signatures, a few hundred more than the petition for California to secede from the US.

What do you think about this secession petition? Do you think it will receive 25,000 signatures by Dec. 11? Tell us in the comments.

Billy, your Obama Derangement Syndrome is too far gone to enter into an honest debate. And I simply don't have time for games because I need to go pick up my welfare check and learn how to read. Funny how I can write, but I can't read... Anyway, one final thought, Billy: It's your choice to be so unhappy.

Why do you call liberals 'leftest wackos?' And the entire UC system would collapse if all the 'leftests' fled the state.

This hits the nail squarely on the head. The petition outburst represents millions of Americans sending a message to the socialist Democrats: we don’t want to fight you, argue with you, try to persuade you or campaign against you. We wish to be free of you and never think of you again.

It will take a precipitating catastrophic event like a financial collapse as some pretty smart money guys are saying is looming over the horizon.
When the USSR collapsed in the early 90s, its vassal states inside and outside of it declared their independence and the Kremlin was powerless to prevent it.

@ blueboy.....too much distortion on that amp. your time is better spent practicing those Pentatonics on a acoustic.

We are not red states and blue states, Republicans and Democrats. We are Americans and it time to act like Americans. Romney lost the election. Get over it. United we stand; divided we fall. Stop being so negative about our country. If you hate the President then don't secede, move.

Or make the world go away, and get those Liberals out of my state.
Or Born to Lose. But it's more like the White Rabbit song around here. These hokkah smoking caterpillars have gone off the deep end.

We get your message bone head... You're a childish sore loser who doesn't have the guts to participate in the American system. I so wish you would leave but you'll just waste everybody's time as your ilk always does. When important pressing issues that need attention arise we waste time as you cry babies throw your temper tantrums. If you can't be a hero you can always be a man. You disgust me. You are destroying this country with your cowardice. See Ya. Wouldn't wanna be ya. Your red states receive much more money from the government than you ever pay in taxes. You're a burden on the national debt. Bye.
David B Secor November 14, 2012 at 07:13 pm
Richard - I've read a little history. Saying "all the issues" is disingenuous at best. All (two) the issues you mention are entirely non-probative.
The moment Lincoln was elected in November 1860, slave states moved from talk to action toward secession. If you think anyone but a white supremacist would claim they would leave the Union because Lincoln was planning on raising taxes is delusional. As to your issue #1, you do know, don't you, the particular "agricultural industry" to which you refer was growing cotton, and wholly dependent on SLAVE LABOR. As to your issue #2, you do know, don't you, that the South's "ability to trade with Europe" was solely about their ability to SELL COTTON grown with SLAVE LABOR. That slave owners were able to get other white southerners, and even black servants in some cases, to fight for the Confederacy when more than 90% of rebel troops had not a single slave themselves doesn't make them "freedom fighter's." By definition, it is impossible to be for both freedom and slavery. Prior to that time, whites in power simply bypassed reality by defining slaves as not quite human, only 3/5 human. Today's white supremacists operate on that same notion. That non-slave-owning whites would die to protect slavery is an indicator how totally ingrained the separation of the races, separate and unequal, with white supremacy , was in the southern psyche of the time. Then "separate but equal" was attempted in this century, etc.

Geoff - lol, funny. Actually I just sold a 12 string Ovation and bought a Gibson Thunderbird bass. Time for a change. I still have a Fender 6 string acoustic, a Gibson Les Paul custom, 2 Fender Strats, a Schecter Diamond Series 006 and partridge in a pear tree... ;o)

Well, I frst read your name as LagunaLunacy, and given your slam, I was probably closer to the truth. Nobody wants a FEMA on the Conservative side til the earth shifts or some major disaster, and their showy house on the hill starts to slide down toward the common folk they would never have invited but who they now expect to pay for it.

@KaBluey... O, a Marxist? Where'd you get that prop. Try reading. (anything, except for Revelation by yourself, as it has too much symbolism; meaning to be taken as Metaphor).

Poor dear Lash LaRue (& those in sympathy with you): You said above "Those who would mock this idea as unattainable are forgetting our nation’s history." From the tone of your post, I take it you were referring to the Revolutionary War. There is, however, another war to which your rants are more germane. Do YOU remember? It was called by some the Civil War & by others the War Between the States & involved Secession by many southern states, Texas among them. Perhaps you also remember from your high school U. S. History class (if you actually took one) how that turned out. Millions of young men died. That meant for me that my great grandfather was the only one of four brothers to survive that war. He & his brothers, though living in a Union state, personally seceded, running off to join the South. They were wrong-headed. Is that the sort of thing you want to repeat? Is that sort of thing worth your hissy fit because you didn't get your way? So you are picking up your toys & heading for the 18th/19th century where you fantasize you will feel at home? Is your house no longer your castle? Have you fallen on hard times? Well, sir, I'm afraid you have only yourself & those of you who voted for eight years of Bush to blame & are dumping fault for the dregs of those years on Obama. Not that he is my ideal--too tied to Big Biz for one thing. But it's Liberty & Justice for All here; that's "ALL" as defined by Webster--not the minority vote but ALL. Deal with it!

Seems to me, William Bonney, that unless you went to a private school that had no ties to public funding in things like textbooks, as my kids got in private school from the state, somebody paid for your education, too. Your parents could not have contributed enough in taxes to sustain one child, much less any siblings, to pay for your education from primary through high school. Matter of fact, my taxes helped other kids when my two went through 8 and 9 years of private education. So, it would seem to me your debt is due. And you can go stand in the corner for your childish insults.

Lash LaRue is really Gregy, that Tea Party Patriot that posts up a storm. Am I right?
B.K. Holthaus November 14, 2012 at 07:31 pm
No one who embraces any sense of reason, logic or proportion takes this secession business seriously.
Cate K. November 14, 2012 at 07:36 pm
Although it is quite entertaining.
Susan November 14, 2012 at 07:37 pm
It's a hoot, isn't it? I'm just grateful there will now be a database of nut jobs so we know how many FEMA camps to build them.
Scott Yeager November 14, 2012 at 07:39 pm
Your delusions about California and Texas would be understandable for a 12 year old. How can you live in a world where what you think is going to come true never actually does?
Gayle M. Montgomery November 14, 2012 at 07:41 pm
These comments are getting patently more offensive. I am the mother of mixed race children--Black, White, and American Indian (Creek). I find these labelings of the President to be disturbing. You are allowed in the Census to check off the box with which you most identify, which could be Other. Some ascribe to the one dop theory, others allow for one's full, known, genetic makeup. If you have ever done or read any of the studies from the National Geographic Genome Product, you will understand that race is an artificial construct, and we all started out n Africa. Get over it. We are all African American down in our core.
KMD November 14, 2012 at 07:41 pm
It's about Americans right to free speech & discourse. Maybe no one taught you that in school. BTW - Almost certain Obama voted for Romney, which is why Obama looked so surprised when he won the election LOL http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/now-obama-lavishes-praise-romey_663350.html

The Marks of this world are too blind to facts to bother arguing with. He thinks 4 generation ofRead More welfare and more people on food stamps then ever before in history is progress! What's the point acknowledging such absurd nonsense? Don't bother Roberto, complete waste of effort.
Marnix A. van Ammers May 27, 2013 at 07:21 am
Nobody likes debt or an economy that is limping along. Obama has done an admirable job consideringRead More what he's had to put up with. The deficit has been reduced considerably. Stock market is as high as ever. Unemployment is still a big problem. Thank God we still have food stamps to help those people who have lost their jobs. Our bridges are falling apart. How about we invest in fixing our crumbling infrastructure, get those people back to work, get them spending, stimulate this economy. Oh, that's right, if Obama is for it, the opposition will automatically be against it (even if it's their idea!) .
Guido Bisogno May 27, 2013 at 07:03 pm
Here we go - perfect example of a blind koolaid drinker. Listen to this: "The deficit has beenRead More reduced considerably" REALLY, then why has it doubled in the last few years? What planet are you from? "Thank God we still have food stamps to help those people who have lost their jobs." then "Obama has done an admirable job"....HELLOOOOOO! You can't have it both ways. My god we are lost if this is the mentality that is voting now - totally lost. I wish these types were routed out of the gene pool when things were tough and they would simply perish from stupidity. Now days thing are so easy they thrive and reproduce. Watch in 10 years how GREAT things are, just watch.
