California Adds Most Jobs in Country in July

Additionally, unemployment fell locally by 1.7 percent.

California led the country in the number of new jobs added in July, according to a report published Friday by Matthew DeBord for Southern California Public Radio (SCPR).

According to DeBord, California added 25,200 new jobs in July - which accounts for a whopping 15 percent of all jobs added across the country last month, which was 163,000.

However, the irony is, California still leads the country in unemployment, as well, he said.

"This was a slightly less-good performance than June, but it continues a trend of California adding jobs at a faster clip than the nation as a whole," DeBord wrote.

According to a report last week from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, in July, 44 states reported unemployment increases, two states and the District of Columbia reported unemployment decreases, and four states reported no change.

When compared to a year earlier, 44 states and the District of Columbia reported decreases in the unemployment rate, four states reported increases, and two states reported no change.

Regionally, the West Coast reported the highest unemployment rate - 9.4 percent - while the Midwest reported the lowest rate, 7.5 percent.

"The slow, agonizing slog out of the jobs crisis in California continues. At this rate, we're unlikely to equal even the national unemployment rate for another year," DeBord speculated.

Locally, unemployment in Sacramento County also dipped, from 12.8 percent in July of 2011 to 11.1 percent last month, according to the Employment Development Department. Total employment for all industries in the Sacramento region (which includes Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties) was 814,000, according to newly released data from the Employment Development Department.

Retail jobs also rose by 1,700 - much higher than in the previous 10 years, when the most new retail jobs created was 100.

"The state's economy is moving in the right direction, however, and once it gets moving — really moving — it could pick up speed," DeBrod speculated.

Andrew ... the VLF (car registration fee) was raised in 2009, before Jerry Brown became governor. What is he doing about unemployment? You realize that the country is adding private sector jobs, including in California, while losing public sector jobs. Right? If you want the Governor to do more (which I've never been convinced that a Governor or President can actually do that much) are you willing to pay more taxes to cover the salaries of those government workers who have lost their jobs. You know, people like teachers and cops and firefighters and others who make sure people get the government services they depend on.

The government is still fat and needs more cutting but not through layoffs but through attrition.

Hello Mark, True Californians began temporarily paying a higher vehicle license fee in 2009, and it is WAS set to expire June 30 2012! But Democrats want to keep that higher rate intact. Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill to delay vehicle registration renewal notices, buying time to negotiate a state budget and allowing rates to climb. This is not my opinion, it's a fact! The Governor and the President can cut the red tape and taxes on small business to create jobs, and that's just one example... Want more? Why reply to me with all those- You realize, Right, You know type stuff? Have some respect!

A lot of those jobes are seasonal firefighter, park and lifeguard jobs from the government. They are great jobs for people and we need them but most of them expire when the weather changes. Each summer they say the same thing...
