Animal Shelter Adoptions Up From a Year Ago

More pets are being taken home at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter, officials say.

Last month, the number of pets at the who found new homes was more than it was in November 2010, according to stats from the shelter.

Eighteen percent more dogs were adopted last month than a year prior, and 61 percent more cats were adopted. October and September also saw increases over those months a year prior.

The shelter also received more animals in November 2011 than it did in November 2010, the stats show. Fewer animals were euthanized, and more were returned to their owners.

In a press release last week, Interim Shelter Director Dave Dickinson credited the increase to better awareness of the shelter, as well as its partnerships with other local animal shelters.

“Our dedicated staff, our tremendous volunteers, and all of our supportive rescue groups work very hard to ensure the needs of the animals and the public are being met, and it shows in our increased adoptions,” Dickinson was quoted as saying.
