Vandals Hit Sequoia Elementary Community Garden

Vandals damaged the community garden at Sequoia Elementary School over the weekend.

The at was vandalized over the weekend, undoing more than 100 hours of volunteer work, lead volunteer Andrea Raymond said.

Saturday night, drip lines were ripped up, planters were pulled apart and overturned, and newly placed fenceposts were uprooted, Raymond said. A shed was also broken into and a window smashed, she said.

"It makes me sick that anyone would do this," Raymond said in an email. "How they are able to live with themselves I don’t know."

Raymond said volunteers were one step away from laying decomposted granite and finishing part of the garden. She said rebuilding the planter boxes will be at least a full day's work.

The garden, , will be maintained by students and members of the community. Volunteers have been working on the garden since January.

"This is a garden that belongs to our community," Raymond wrote. "They have in essence, destroyed their own garden. It is a shame [that] some people take pleasure in destroying what others build and appreciate."

Sacramento City Unified School District spokesman Gabe Ross said district staff and its school resource officers will work with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department on an investigation.

A volunteer day at Sequoia Elementary School had already been scheduled for this weekend, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Local members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will be painting and cleaning up the school, and the event is open to the public.
