Stolen Car Driven to Probation Office, Driver Arrested

Sacramento resident Clifford Amey was arrested last week.

A Sacramento man was arrested at the Sacramento County Probation Department office just west of Rosemont last week after authorities say he pulled up in a stolen Mercedes.

The man, Clifford Amey, had a warrant out for his arrest on fraud charges in Fresno County. He was also on searchable probation.

He was trying to visit the downtown probation department office on May 3, but came to the Florin-Perkins Road location by mistake, Sacramento County Chief Probation Officer Don Meyer said.

Meyer said the suspect's gold Mercedes was spotted by the department's automated license plate camera, which checks for stolen cars.

"Immediately when the vehicle pulled in, the automated license plate reader said it was stolen," Meyer said in a phone interview. "We verified it was stolen."

Amey was arrested, and a local dealership came to tow the car away. Amey was later transferred to Fresno County, Meyer said.

Probation department spokeswoman Kerri Aiello said the car was purchased last month with a bad check.

Meyer said this was the 27th stolen car found by the department's automated license plate readers, which it started using in October.
