Updated: Murder-Suicide near SMUD Office Tuesday

Two men are dead, according to Sacramento Police.

A man shot and killed another man before turning the gun on himself Tuesday night near the east Sacramento headquarters of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD).

The Sacramento Bee reports that neither man is believed to be an employee of SMUD, the utility district that provides electricity to Rosemont. The paper cited a police spokesman as saying the pair were part of a group of model airplane enthusiasts that were using a SMUD meeting room.

The Sacramento Police Department said in a press release that the shooter, who the county coroner's website identified as 73-year-old Robert Gully of West Sacramento, got into an argument with the victim "and a female acquaintance."

"Sometime during the altercation the suspect shot and killed the victim," the press release states. "The suspect then chased and shot at the female as she ran into the lobby of the nearby business. The suspect then returned back to the parking where he fatally shot himself."

The victim was identified by the coroner's office as 62-year-old Jerome Votaw of Sacramento.

Police first responded to the scene in the 6200 block of S Street at 7:18 p.m., according to the press release.

Original story, 8:45 p.m. Tuesday: The Sacramento Police Department said Thursday evening that two men were killed in an apparent muder-suicide near the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) headquarters in east Sacramento.

The incident, in the 6200 block of S Street, is just south of the electric utility that serves Rosemont. SMUD is currently building a new equipment yard near Kiefer Boulevard and Bradshaw Road.
