A heated altercation

Joshua Baker's bad decisions didn't end at the attempted armed robbery of a man's laptop.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, the would-be thief, 18, grabbed the victim's laptop and attempted to make off with it, according to a sheriff's department report. Before he could do so though, the victim, who was seated in a populated Bradshaw Road McDonald's, made a grab for his property when Baker turned around and produced what appeared to be a small handgun. Two customers seated close to the victim approached to assist him in retreiving the stolen item, but were welcomed by the receiving end of Baker's simulated firearm.

"In Baker's case, the 'simulated firearm' was a gun-shaped lighter," Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Ramos said in an e-mail.

Baker then fled the scene on a bicycle prior to officers arrival, according to the report. He was detained a short distance away.

According to the report, a search of the area resulted in the location of victim's property and property belonging to Baker, including the bicycle and the simulated firearm.
