Local Students to Take a Behind-the-Scenes Look at FBI Headquarters

Are you curious about what being an FBI agent and working cases is really like?

If you are a high school junior, you are in luck.

On Nov. 22, a group of high school juniors selected from schools within the 34 California counties served by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Sacramento field office will have the rare opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes of Sacramento FBI headquarters.

Students selected to attend the Fall 2013 class will spend the day in FBI space, meeting FBI personnel and learning what it takes to be an agent, what the FBI investigates, how to avoid behaviors that can negatively impact their futures, and some pitfalls of online communication.

In addition to lecture-style presentations, students will also enjoy demonstrations, hands-on activities and experiences that offer greater understanding of what the FBI does in terms of evidence collection, bomb response, and more.

By attending the class, students are better prepared to mentor their peers, especially those who may face significant challenges during the school year, make better choices in regard to their online activities, are able to separate FBI myth from fact, know more about FBI career opportunities and the requirements for candidacy, and are more aware of the challenges that face their communities.

All high school juniors in the region are encouraged to apply. Application packages are available to print directly from the “In Your Community” page of the Sacramento FBI’s website.

Applications are accepted at Sacramento FBI headquarters by hand or postal delivery until the deadline of 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013. Completed student application packages should include an application form, a photo release/indemnity form, and a personal essay detailing why the student wants to attend the FBI Teen Academy and what benefit the experience will have for the student’s community and school.

The one-day Sacramento FBI Teen Academy is offered at no cost to students; however, families are responsible for transportation to and from class and other personal arrangements that may be necessary to enable students to attend the class..
