Business Spotlight: Getting Lucky at Mayhew Bingo Center

The Tech Center Drive business is open most evenings.

is located at 9333 Tech Center Dr., Suite 200. Owner Dick Fukushima answered a few questions about his business, how things have changed over the years and wacky rituals he's seen.

Q. How long have you been in business at this location?

A. "The Mayhew Bingo Center has been in the office complex for 28 years.  Until a few years ago they were located just next door.  They have now moved into a bigger part of the complex."

Q.  Do you benefit a non-profit organization?

A. "All earnings, minus the overhead, benefit the ."

Q. What is the craziest ritual you have ever seen from a bingo player?

A. "One woman would get up and walk around her seat three times when she was not winning."

Q.  What you say the average attendance is?

A. "[The] average attendance is 200-250 each session."

Q.  How much is the average jackpot?

A. "The average jackpot is $250. There are also some special games that get played during each session that pay up to $500."

Q.  What does it cost to play a session of bingo?

A. "A regular session of bingo costs $10 for a buy-in.  If you include all the special games, it will run you about $23."

Q.  Do you have a smoking section?

A. "Yes, we have a room that is designated for smoking only."

Q.  What are the hours of operation?

A. "Monday [and] Wednesday through Saturday, the doors open at 4:00 p.m. and bingo starts at 6:30 p.m.  Sundays we open at 10:00 a.m. and bingo starts at 12:30 p.m. We are closed Tuesdays."

Q.  What big changes have you seen due to the economy?

A. "There has been a decrease in numbers over the past few years."

Q.  What is one piece of advice you would give to a new player?

A. "You are given a control card when you pay, my advice would be to make sure that you sign it.  If you win and your control card is not signed you will not get the winnings."

Q.  Are there any inside secrets to bingo?

A. "None. Just get lucky!"
