Where Are All Your Neighbors Moving Away To?

Vivid map illustrates the exodus from California to states such as Texas, Nevada, Washington and Oregon.

A wild new data visualization shows how people move between states, colorfully illustrating where 566,986 Californias moved away to in 2012.

Created by Chris Walker, the interactive map shows that 493,641 people moved here that year.  Of those, the most by far are coming from New York.

Judging by the data the Lone Star state might start having to learn surfer lingo and eat more sprouts: 62,000 Californians moved there in 2012.

In case you're wondering, the state's overall population does continue to grow, by 0.8 percent last year, largely due to births and an influx of foreign immigrants.
