Weekend Planner: Fourth of July Events, Roller Skating, More

Here's what's happening in and around Rosemont this weekend.

You can already hear the sounds of celebrating, for another three-day weekend approaches. This one is extra-special, too–what with it being in honor of Independence Day. The Fourth boasts an assortment of to-do's, including complimentary admission to a nearby military museum and a laundry list of choices at the Rancho Cordova Fourth of July Celebration, which runs both Sunday and Monday. Star-spangled worship, a Sacramento Zoo "slumber party" and roller blading outings are also clamoring for your attendance, so make like a bottle rocket and blast off! 

1. Roller Skating/Blading

Where/When: The Rink, 2900 Bradshaw Rd. / Friday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight

Why Go: Don't sit at home watching yet another DVD when you could be out getting exercise and having a ball at the newly renovated Rink, where you can roller blade or skate to your heart's content during one of three sessions, and enjoy the old favorites of Red Light/Green Light, backward and couples' skate and even the limbo—how low can you go?

Pricing: $6 per person / $2 extra session / $2.50 skate rental.

2. Overnight Safari

Where/When: Sacramento Zoo, 3930 West Land Park Dr. / 6 p.m. Friday (please arrive on time, as entrance gates will close at exactly 6 p.m.) to 9 a.m. Saturday

Why Go: This one-of-a-kind outing is guaranteed to stay with you for years to come as the ultimate family memory. You'll spend the night on the reptile house lawn under the stars, feast on a delicious dinner, partake in the "Nighttime Safari," which includes animal feeding, a campfire circle and more. In the morning, you'll have breakfast with the animals, see feedings and enjoy a "Morning Walkabout."

Pricing: $50 for adult members / $46 for child members ages 4 to 17 / $60 for adult nonmembers / $56 for child nonmembers ages 4 to 17. Call to reserve your spot.

Where/When: / Sunday services at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

Why Go: Come to the church auditorium for the ultimate Independence Day celebration.  Military personnel, veterans and peace officers are encouraged to come in full uniform to commemorate this special day—three cheers for the red, white and blue!

4. Independence Day Event

Where/When: California State Military Museum, 1119 Second St. / 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday

Why Go: Find out all about California's military history on the most patriotic day of the year. View flags, weapons and exhibits, including memorabilia from the Persian Gulf War, California Cavalry, Spanish and Mexican California and much more—a pitstop at the Major General Walter Story Memorial Library and Research Center on the way out is a must.

Pricing: Free.

Where/When: 2197 Chase Dr., Rancho Cordova (Hagan Park) / noon to 11 p.m., Sunday and Monday

Why Go: Come on out for this two-day community festival with your family and enjoy a plethora of activities including a parade, carnival rides, pedal boats, displays, a history table, Kansas City BBQ Competition, beach party on Sunday, three beer gardens, bands (including Superlicious on Monday), Kids Zone, Teen Extreme Zone and a fireworks show. Pricing: $2 admission / free for children under 5
$10 parking.
