July 13: Volunteer with Pets, Jets

Find out what's happening in and around Rosemont today.

Today is Embrace your Geekness Day! So all you geeks out there who play Dungeons and Dragons, have an extensive comic book collection or spend hours on web forums, celebrate what makes you geeky! Need some help finding things to do? We've got public swim hours at Rosemont High, plenty of activities at Capital Christian Center, a free diner at Cordova Church and two very different volunteer opportunities.

  1. There's a multitude of positive activities for you and your family to enjoy at . The center will be offering a GriefShare Ministry to help you deal with the death of a loved one at 7 p.m., a 6:13 Wednesday night prayer to focus on the Ephesians 6:13 verse at (you guessed it!) 6:13 p.m., an adult Bible study group at 7:15 p.m. and many programs centered toward your children, from kindergarten students to teenagers. Check out the church's calendar for more information.
  2. Pack up the kids and the sunscreen and head to  today for the Cordova Recreation and Park District's public swim session. From now until August 12, the public is invited to swim in the school's pool from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is just $2 per per person, per visit, and if you're going to frequent the pool you can get a 10-punch card for $15, so head to Rosemont High and beat the heat!
  3. Don't have the money to go out tonight? Head over to  today from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a free dinner. The dinner is open to everyone, even if you just want to have a nice meal with others. The church offers free dinners every Wednesday, followed by fun activities for all ages.
  4. The California Capital Airshow will once again return to Mather Field this September. Want to get a behind-the-scenes look into the show? Become a volunteer! The show is looking for volunteers aged 18 and over to help out on September 11 and 12for eight to 10 hours each day. All those who help out will get a free lunch and the chance to be a part of a special event. A volunteer recruitment fair will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Rancho Cordova City Hall.
  5.  If the sound of roaring jets isn't your thing, there's another volunteer opportunity -- this one is way cuddlier! The is once again looking for volunteers 18 years or older. The shelter will hold a volunteer orientation tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All volunteers must commit to at least 10 hours per month for six months and volunteers can sign up for anything, from walking the dogs to helping customers.
