Grab and Go Kids Planner: Little League Opening Day, Engine Class, History Lesson, More

Looking for something to do with the kids this weekend? Patch has you covered.

This week is chock-full of educational, fun, and entertaining kid-friendly activities in and around the Rosemont area. From an engine class at the California Automobile Museum, to learning about women's role in 19th-century California, and a free Camellia Symphony Orchestra concert, there's bound to be something for everyone.

Rosemont Little League Opening Day

Where/When: / Parade at 8 a.m., games start at 10 a.m. on Saturday

Why Go: See how many little league games you can catch at once–weather permitting, there will be a total of 18 teams playing at Saturday's opening day. But first, catch a parade starting at , down Mirandy Drive to the fields on Contempo Drive. Local vendors will be on hand, a raffle will be held, and River Cats mascot Dinger is expected to make an appearance.

Kids' Engine Class

Where/When: California Automobile Museum, 2200 Front St. / 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Why Go: A three-hour, hands-on class for kids (boys and girls in the fifth through ninth grades) and their adult buddy, they can take apart a Briggs and Stratton one-cylinder engine and learn how liquids, solids and gases interact to make it run. Participants will also get to fire up various engines to see how each performs its specific job. There isn't any driving or riding involved, and participants won't get greasy. The museum promises plenty of noise and smoke, though.

Pricing: $20 for child/adult pair with museum membership, $25 for non-member child/adult pair; prices include entry to museum

Hands on History: Hearth and Home

Where/When: Sutter's Fort State Historic Fort, 2701 L St. / 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Why Go: Learn and develop a greater appreciation of the women who bravely traveled west in the 19th century while keeping their families fed and providing comfort and stability during a very unstable journey. Help with baking, weaving, spinning, sheep shearing, test your skills with 19th-century teaching lessons and even take home a hand-made souvenir and recipes from the era.

Free Family Concert

Where/When: Sacramento Public Library, 828 I Street/Sunday, Instrument Petting Zoo at 1 p.m., Concert 2 – 3 p.m.

Why Go: The Camellia Symphony Orchestra offers free concerts designed to introduce people of all ages to classical music in a fun, casual and informative format. Go to a free concert then check out some books, not a bad way to spend a Sunday!

Pricing: Free

Sakuramento Anime Sundays 

Where/When: Rancho Cordova Library, 9845 Folsom Blvd., Sunday, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Why Go: Watch Anime and Anime Music Videos (AMVs), play CCGs, practice your art skills and make AMVs. This is a teen-aged event, and is sponsored by the Sakuramento Anime Society and the library. Participants are asked to enter through the side for the Community Room Door.
