Get Out: Weekend Planner for March 18-20

Local activities for this weekend include stand-up comedy acts, funk music and more.

Post-St. Patrick's Day festivities are aplenty this weekend, and thankfully (well, hopefully) they won't be as inebriated as Thursday's. But for those needing a little hair of the dog, or those who weren't able to participate in the debauchery, here's a sampling of fun events around the Sacramento area. From a multimedia poetry performance group to funky dance music and stand-up comedy shows, we've got you covered.

Set Theory ('Urban Funk' Sacramento band)

Where/When: Marilyn's on K, 908 K St. / 9 p.m. on Friday.

Why Go: Influenced by modern music styles like dub, hip-hop, electronic, drum 'n' bass, dub step, jam bands and rock, Set Theory promises a big, bold, energy-packed performance that's sure to please most music lovers. Hailing from Sacramento and dubbed as one of the area's “must see” bands, Set Theory creates a “sick sound” the members refer to as “urban funk.” Sounds temping, yeah?

Pricing: $5

Sister Spit Sacramento

Where/When: Sacramento Poetry Center, 1719 25th St. / 7 - 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Why Go: A rowdy performance group, Sister Spit will unleash its multimedia, queer-centric hilarity/insight/brilliance upon Sacramento this Sunday. Featuring "taste-makers, novelists, fashion plates, painters, performance artists, poets and fancy scribblers," there will be plenty of writers, artists and other like-minded folks to help you think about what you may–or may not–want to think about.

Pricing: $8 advance, $10 at the door.

Hip Service at Harlow's

Where/When: Harlow's, 2708 J St. / 9:30 p.m. - 1 a.m. Saturday.

Why Go: Get your funk on with Hip Service. A dance band featuring 12 performers, Hip Service is known locally for playing classics and modern popular hits, from Marvin Gaye to Lady Gaga, and getting a crowd on its feet. With four lead vocalists, a four-piece horn section, a funky rhythm section and four sexy dancers, Harlow's will be hopping Saturday night.

Pricing: $12

Stand-Up Shoot-Out

Where/When: Comedy Spot, 1050 20th St., Suite 130 / 9 p.m. on Friday.

Why Go: Four comedians enter, but only one comedian leaves with a $50 cash prize and chance to be part of the championship series featuring all previous winners (this happens every four months). Best part? The audience picks the winner. Allow your funny bone to be tickled in the heart of midtown.

Pricing: $10

Josh Blue

Where/When: Punchline Comedy Club, 2100 Arden Way / 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Why Go: He's appeared on Comedy Central's “Mind of Mencia,” was a favorite on NBC's “Last Comic Standing,” and has played on the U.S. Paralympic soccer team. He uses humor and his versatile persona to defy stereotypes while encouraging others to overcome their preconceived notions about those who are considered “disabled.” Using “reverse teasing,” Josh Blue takes great joy in “humbling condescending people” while making his audience howl with laughter.

Pricing: $22.50 and a two-drink minimum
