Get Out: Weekend Planner for April 1 – 3

Do some chanting, support Japan, go hiking or check out a beer festival.

This first weekend of April promises (mostly) sunny skies and warmth to push you out of the house and into fun festivities. Start off your Friday night by chanting to music and drum beats, then ease into your Saturday by buying some delicious delights and simultaneously support Japan. Then check out the Sacramento Saturday Market at Cal Expo, or take a women's only day hike, or go to a Bockbier Beer Festival. Whatever you do, enjoy this magical spring weather and so something you love.

Sacramento Bake Sale for Japan  

Where/When: Cafe Au Lait, 2107 P St. / 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday

Why Go: As part of a nationwide , Cafe Au Lait is hosting the Sacramento Bake Sale for Japan and will be selling donated cakes, pies, breads, cupcakes, cookies and more. All proceeds go to the relief organization Peace Winds Japan, so swing by and buy yourself or your sweetie a treat and learn how to fold an origami crane.

Evening of Kirtan (chanting with live music)

Where/When: Padme Yoga Center, 1899 Alhambra Blvd., Suite 120 / 7 – 8 p.m. on Friday

Why Go: Using call and response chanting using Sanskrit mantras, the rhythmic and repetitive quality of Kirtan creates a soothing, joyful mood while clearing the mind from any clutter and allowing for deep meditation. There will also be live drum music. No reservations or experience is necessary to join in on the fun and mix up your Friday night.

Sacramento Saturday Market

Where/When: Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Ave. / 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday

Why Go: This Saturday marks the first Sacramento Saturday Market of the year, which will be held on the first and third Saturday of each month through December. It's an outdoor arts and crafts market in the parking lot E at Cal Expo, and offers the opportunity to meet local artists and see their unique pieces, while picking up fresh produce from locals farmers. A Kids Zone features face painting, a bounce house and arts and crafts for the little ones. A small section of the market is set aside for vendors selling gently used items and is similar to a yard sale.

Pricing: $1 admission, parking is free.

Bockbier Beer Fest

Where/When: Sacramento Turn Verein, 3349 J St. / 6 p.m. – Midnight on Friday, 3 p.m. – Midnight on Saturday

Why Go: Bockbiers are traditionally strong beers made in the winter for future summer drinking, and is a traditional Bavarian beer that's dark in color and relatively high in alcohol content. Sacramento's version of the Bockbier season will include lively German music by the Sacramento Turner Harmonie, Bavarian folk dancing, German food, coffee cake and “Bockbier flowing like the Sacramento River.” This marks the 43rd year of the festival.

Pricing: $20 (includes $10 food and drink tickets), $5 for children 12 and younger.

Women's Beginning Hike: Monroe Ridge Trail

Where/When: Peak Adventures Office (Sacramento State campus) / 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday

Why Go: This three-mile round-trip is perfect for beginners and is the first hike of three in the women's trip series. Monroe Ridge Trail is located in the Marshall Gold State Park in Coloma, and the trail winds through the sierra foothills and into the historic mining town, before ending at the James Marshall Monument. Join other women for a day of fresh air, to learn local history and enjoy the company of other adventurous people. The trip includes guides and transportation.

Pricing: $25 for Sac State students, $32 for affiliates, $36 for the public.
