American River Trail Named a Top Urban Bike Path in U.S.

The American River Bike Trail runs from Downtown Sacramento, near Rosemont and into Folsom.

The Rosemont area is home to one of the best urban bike trails in the country, according to USA Today

The American River Bike Trail, which runs from Downtown Sacramento along the river through Carmichael and Fair Oaks near Rosemont and into Folsom, made the list. The list also included bike trails like Lakefront Trail in Chicago and Manhattan Waterfront Greenway in New York City.

The criteria for determining the best urban bike trails in the U.S. included access to cities while mostly avoiding vehicle traffic, beautiful scenery and well paved for easy riding.

Almost all of the 12 trails run alongside a body of water, the American River Bike Trail included.

According to USA Today, here's why our local trail stood out:

"A paved 32-mile route from downtown Sacramento to neighboring Folsom, this wide, multi-use path traces the American River through scenic bends, wildlife areas, and even over a small-scale replica of the Golden Gate Bridge. With few road crossings, flat terrain (at least on the Sacramento end), and mile markers, this trail is a favorite for commuters and those looking to escape the city on a weekend ride."
