A PTA President on the School Board? Pritchett Will Run

"I have a strong voice and I feel like I could make a difference," longtime volunteer Christina Pritchett said.

Most people who have spent time at Rosemont school events would likely recognize Christina Pritchett. She's currently the president of parent-teacher associations at both Albert Einstein Middle School and Rosemont High School, even though she doesn't have any kids currently in high school. She was brought on stage and honored at the Essence of Rosemont celebration last month, and she had to go directly from a recent interview to assisting behind the scenes at Sequoia Elementary School's talent show. Pritchett announced late Friday that she plans to run for school board in the Sacramento City Unified School District, in the seat currently held by Trustee Donald Terry. The seat represents Rosemont, College Greens, La Riviera, parts of Rancho…

Speak Cantonese, Mandarin or Spanish? The County Has a Job For You

Sacramento County is seeking precinct officers for the June 5 election.

The Sacramento County Elections Office is preparing for the statewide June 5 election, and needs more precinct workers who speak Cantonese, Mardarin or Spanish. These workers staff polling places, and are paid $100 for working from 6 a.m. to about 10 p.m., according to a press release. First-time precinct workers also earn $25 to attend a training class. "To serve as a precinct officer you must be a United States citizen, California resident, registered voter, able to read and write English, and are at least 18 years of age," the office said in a press release. "Persons on parole for the conviction of a felony may not serve as a precinct officer." The precinct officers issue and collect ballots, assist voters, and "prepare, open, maintain …

School Board Member Terry Will Run for Rancho Cordova City Council

Donald Terry will run for Rancho Cordova City Council, he announced Friday.

The Sacramento City Unified School District Trustee who represents Rosemont will not seek reelection this fall, and instead will run for Rancho Cordova City Council. "As much as I love being a school board member, I think this is a new challenge and a new opportunity, and I'm really excited about it," Donald Terry said in a phone interview Friday. Terry said he has been endorsed by current Rancho Cordova City Council Member Ken Cooley, who is running for State Assembly, as well as Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and Assembly Member Roger Dickinson. In a letter announcing his plans to run for city council, Terry said he would bring "common sense leadership and experience in creating real economic development" if he's elected. He said he …

Hi Rosemont Mom, Are there any specific issues where you disagree with Donald Terry's actions? Or is there something you were hoping he would have been able to accomplish on the school board?   more ›

Do You Vote by Mail? This Baby Thinks You Should

Local election officials posted an online ad last week.

Sacramento County Elections officials have enlisted a young spokesman for voting by mail, and they aren't bashful about their influences. “The E-Trade Baby commercials are attention-grabbing and entertaining,” a press release quoted Sacramento County Registrar of Voters Jill LaVine as saying. “We wanted to use this medium to reach out and communicate with people of all ages about voting by mail.” In a video posted last week and originally produced by Riverside County, a talking toddler reminiscent of the ones promoting the online stock trading website advises his mom to vote by mail to avoid "standing in line like a vote-a-saurus." Just more than half of Sacramento County's 645,558 registered voters vote by mail, according to the press …

Rosemont Moving Congressional Districts in 2012

Rosemont residents will vote in a new Congressional election next year.

Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) will no longer represent Rosemont as congressional lines are redrawn across California. Rosemont will now be in District 7, an area including parts of unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, Elk Grove and Folsom. “Every 10 years the new Census numbers come out and districts need to be equalized for population,” said Wesley Hussey, a California State University, Sacramento, government professor who was a finalist on the California Citizens Redistricting Commission. “For congressional districts I’ve been pretty impressed with the map collectively.” Matsui said she will run in the new District 6, which will cover the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento. “It has been my pleasure to represent …
