Rosemont's Mexican Supermarket Reopens with New Owners

Family also operates store on Fruitridge Road.

A on Kiefer Boulevard has reopened under new owners, making it a family's second Sacramento-area store.

The new store at 9180 Kiefer Blvd., La Popular Supermarket, opened last week.

"We decided to open another one and see how it works [out]," said Diana Pineda, the daughter of owner Manuel Pineda.

The family's other store is on Fruitridge Road in Sacramento, she said, adding that they had been thinking about opening a second for about six months.

Diana Pineda said her family was impressed by how busy the previous store was, and volunteered to help staff it temporarily and pay some of the owner's bills to help keep it afloat.

Now, it's just her, her father and two other employees in the Kiefer Boulevard market. A grand opening banner hangs outside, but many of the shelves are still bare as the new owners set up shop.

"We cook every day, so the food is fresh," Diana Pineda said. "We bring bread from our other store–we have a bakery over there."

She said the store, which also features meat, produce and specialty Mexican products like medicines, will strive to have fresh goods and friendly service.

"There are no stores around here, like Mexican stores," she said. "We're the only one around here."

That's a welcome change for the Pineda family–the Fruitridge area where the other store has been for about six years has "a lot of competition."
