Rancho PD Chooses New Chief

The sheriff's department captain will also oversee the east division, which patrols Rosemont.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department division that patrols Rosemont has a new leader, the city of Rancho Cordova announced Monday.

Rosanne Richeal, the former assistant chief of the Rancho Cordova Police Department, will serve as the new chief of police for that city and the head of the sheriff's department's east division, according to a news release.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to bring Rosanne Richeal back to our police department,” Rancho Cordova City Manager Ted Gaebler was quoted as saying. “She was offered the position after competing in a rigorous selection process. She served well as our Assistant Police Chief, and I’m confident that she will do just as well as our Police Chief.”

Richeal, who holds the rank of captain in the sheriff's department, will replace Doug Diamond, who resigned to take a job in Utah. Her first day as chief of police will be March 19.

Her appointment also marks some firsts for the city and the sheriff's department: "She will be the first female Chief of Police in the City’s 8½-year history," the news release said. "Her career also includes being the first female to command the main county jail and the first female motorcycle officer in the history of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department."

“I’m excited about the opportunity to return to the Rancho Cordova Police Department,” Richeal was quoted as saying. “And, I look forward to working diligently to carry forward the vision of the Growing Strong Neighborhoods initiative. I am also eager to renew community relationships and develop new opportunities for RCPD.”

What crime issues should Richeal focus on in Rosemont? Tell us in the comments.

The new chief was not the first female motorcycle officer in the history of the Sacramento County Sheriffs Department. There is a full page article in the September 5 , 2004 Sacramento Bee describing the first female motor officer and it was not the new chief...check it out.
