History Celebrated at Rosemont High

Rosemont High School will host 220 students participating in Sacramento History Day Saturday.

Students from all over Sacramento County will gather at on Saturday to celebrate history and compete for a spot in April’s Statewide history contest in Riverside.

Around 220 public and private school students grades 4 through 12 are expected to compete in Sacramento History Day. Competitions include live dramatic performances, documentaries, research papers, interactive websites and artistic displays.

According to Dylan McDonald, a historian with the Center for Sacramento History, the objective is not just for participants to embrace history, but to build self esteem and confidence by entering.

“I think the overall goal is to be able to teach students to gain some critical thinking and problem solving skills and to improve their research and communication skills,” McDonald said. “Being involved in the process gives the students a better sense of responsibility and sills they can use in college or their career.”

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

“It’s really one of the good local events where people can watch students achieving,” said Tim Herrera, communications director for the Sacramento County Office of Education.

Herrera described it as a way for shines that students don’t usually get to have.

This year’s theme is History Comes “Alive” at Sacramento County History Day. The event is part of National History Day, a year-long educational program. The program teaches students the relevance and importance of history.

“I think the great thing about programs like history day are that they helps celebrate what I think is an unsung subject,” Herrera said. “It’s an important subject.”

There are currently no students from Rosemont High School registered for the event.

The History Day schedule is”

  • 9 to 10 a.m. – “Live” dramatic performances and student interviews
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Documentary viewing and student interviews
  • 2:30 p.m. – Public viewing of exhibits
