Missy Fuerst may seem intimidating when you see her across the volleyball net, but she's really not all that bad.
The 6-foot-3-inch Capital Christian senior outside hitter is also a co-captain for the Cougars, who are 19-8 on the season following Wednesday's 3-0 win over Marysville. The team is in first place in the league, and is undefeated in league play.
Opponents have been known to complain and make comments about Fuerst's height, but she said she hasn't let it get to her.
"I take as encouragement, like they're a little intimidated," she said, showing a sunny disposition. "It's fun, definitely."
Fuerst said her team's highlight so far this season was beating rival West Campus 3-2 at Capital Christian on Oct. 5. The two teams meet again on Monday at West Campus.
Fuerst said her team is looking to make the playoffs. She has the most kills on the team with 216, and had 18 kills in a single match against Dixon on Sept. 26.
Coach Carly Vacher praised Fuerst's skills.
"To the team, she is consistent and reliable," Vacher said in an email. "She makes the least amount of mistakes."
Besides volleyball, Fuerst is the senior class secretary at Capital Christian.
"I love our schools because the teachers are caring; they're heare for you and pray with you if you need help," she said. "And there's no drama on our team–we have each other's backs."
Fuerst said her favorite subject is English.
"I have a great teacher, Mr. (Scott) Foran," she said. "He's teaching us how to write college essays now."
Fuerst said she wants to study education to become a teacher. Her top college choice is Westmont College, a Christian liberal arts college in Santa Barbara.
Fuerst has also played for the Precision Volleyball Club based in Placerville.
